It is difficult to say what is normal for each home when every homes plumbing is unique to each house. But as a general rule IF a property draws water at the time of our flushing and the water in the distribution has been stirred up creating a color change the first thing to do is run your house cold side only until it clears. But here is the Y in the road, we could be just be starting on your street and in some areas of town we could sit on a hydrant for over an hour flushing.
Normally we are out of a street area in about ½ hr to 2 hrs, after that then if you are experiencing discolored water just run the cold side only until it clears. Most folks see this in the bath room when a toilet is flushed or bathing so it is very noticeable.
We also recommend if possible to not run the hot side if you are experiencing discolored water on the cold side it could get into the hot water tank which can take longer to clear out during normal hot side usage.
As for the water in a filtered side of the fridge, since the line that is feeding the fridge is on the same cold side pipe it would be best to refrain from using the fridge until the rest of the house runs clear. Your may have a small residual of discolored water that you would need to purge out on that small ¼” line to the refrigerator.
