Can I build a fence on my property?

It is likely that you will be able to put a fence in your yard; however, the Village Code has requirements for fence height and placement. For example, fences in the rear or side yard can be up to 6 feet in height, but in the front yard the maximum height is four feet (up to 6 feet could be allowed with Plan Commission approval).  You also can’t put a fence on an easement without Plan Commission involvement, and fences cannot be closer than 2 feet from the public right of way.  Because fences include these types of restrictions, there is a permit and inspection required for building a fence. In addition to the application, residents must include a copy of their property survey that identifies right of ways, easements, and property lines, as well as the proposed placement of the fence.  For questions, contact Building Inspection Services staff at 250-4760.
